I'm still that boy--
the one on his blue Schwinn--
speeding through thick summer heat,
dodging overhanging branches,
outrunning the imagined monsters of childhood,
pedaling madly against looming adolescence,
against responsibility, term papers and summer jobs
(picking blueberries, mowing lawns).
Faster! Faster!
They're gaining on us!
All shall be lost!
And it is--
freedom, innocence,
dappled woods,
bare, puddle-splashed legs,
tanned, sun-splashed arms--
gone, dissolved,
hazed into memory.
In all possibilities of heaven,
that blue bike waits for me.
Do you wait, too?
